I’m comin’ to break you off…
…Off them generational curses.
You know, the things we blame on our mamas and daddies and grandmas and grandpappies. The reasons we can’t manage money right or have multiple marriages or a host of other “curses”.
I was talking to someone last week about how his father was the reason he had philandering ways. It was a “generational curse” on his life that he was desperately working to break.
A whole bunch of tongue talkin’ and spittin’ ensued.
This morning I learned that it doesn’t take all of that.
There’s one easy thing that will break a generational curse. Want to know what it is?
It’s really simple.
Obedience.
Yep. That’s it. Obedience.
“How can it be that simple?” you ask? I’ll tell you what the spirit of God told me:
The perpetuation was a generational curse is a refusal to obey God’s word on the matter. Whether that is a family of women who are all divorced or a son following in his father’s whorish ways or a college kid who blows through their paycheck from Footlocker every week on alcohol because granddaddy was a drunkard, all of these “curses” are a refusal to simply obey the Word of God.
Deuteronomy 28 explicitly tells us that we have opportunities for blessings and cursings which are contingent of our obedience or disobedience.
If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully keep all his commands that I am giving you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations of the world. — Deuteronomy 28:1, NLT
And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God. Deuteronomy 28:2, KJV
As you know, God gives us 12 verses about what kind of blessings we’ll encounter if we obey Him following Deuteronomy 28:1-2. There was no secret formula. There wasn’t any laying of hands, pouring of holy water, or COGIC dancing. He just said obey and you’ll be blessed.
How much more than for those “generational” things we deal with? If daddy, granddaddy, and great granddaddy battled with an issue, you can stop the generational curse in your life and in the lives of your children by simply obeying God.
My obedience in tithing, abstaining from premarital sex, and having a “divorce is not an option” attitude before I get married is slaying every generational curse in my family. The buck stops here, folks. You have the same ability by simply obeying God in the area that affects your family the most.
We are breakin’ off generational curses. And guess what? We’re doing it through the most simplistic, easy way possible: obedience.
Comin’ to break you off somethin’ proper,
Alisha L.
