Tonight, I spent some time talking to a good friend about how God was dealing with her regarding moving forward with a very important creative project. In years past, she tried to make moves towards completing the assignment, but different things (and people) kept getting in the way.
Needless to say, the Holy Spirit got her right together and she’s moving forward, but our conversation lead to a discussion on a mathematical topic: variables and constants.
Many times we delay moving forward in something God told us to do because of variables. “What if this happens? What if this person doesn’t do what they say they will? What if I don’t have the means/money/skills required to pull this off?”
All of those questions are a result of our eyes being set on variables, the ever-changing, inconsistent things that we have no control over. A Mathematician or Scientist is always looking at variables to ensure that the thing they’re building is safe, usable, and serves its purpose. However, once those variables have been identified and locked in, they only operate by constants. They build machines, cars, buildings by constants. They frame the scope of medicines and other life changing elements by constants. Believers should do the same thing.
I the LORD do not change… Malachi 3:6
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Hebrews 13:8
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. James 1:17
Christ is our constant. We only have to consider His Word, His way of doing things, His viewpoint in order to be successful in anything we’re called to do. Waiting for the variables to get in the right position for us to make a move wastes time and allows fear to creep in. Once fear is there, we may never make a move in the right direction, ultimately thwarting God’s plan for our lives.
What are the variables in your life that are keeping you from moving forward? List them. Write them down.
Once you’re done, identify why they’re there — is it a habit, excuse, result of fear?
After you’ve identified why they’re there, trash them. Literally. Understand that the one and only thing you need to move forward is an everlasting, never-changing, constant. He will never change, never fail you, never flip the script or switch his intentions for your success. Because He’s so consistent, you can rest assured that everything He’s told you to do will be a sure, steady, and the feet your path take are solid as the foundation He built this world on.
Let’s move forward.
On the Chase,
